Cambridge mass the city of chance, opportunity, diversity and most importantly basketball. Growing up as child in Cambridge all you hear is stories about basketball and the great tradition, reputation we have built to become the model of a winning basketball, program over decades that seamlessly trout out great teams contending for the right to be named state champions every year. This tradition is passed on to each generation of kids in Cambridge very young because most likely my father your father once wore the falcon jersey over his chest or if we go way back in the 90Ã¢â¬â¢s those teams wore the warriors across his chest. I played for the falcons and graduated in 2015 after having finished my high school basketball career on a memorable run to the Boston garden. Playing in the semi finals against catholic memorial to be one of four teams to punch in our ticket to the big dance and represent as eastern mass champions in the DCU center for the state championship. Looking bac k at this photo brings me back to 2011 when I was still just 16 years old just dreaming about wearing the Cambridge jersey but I wasnÃ¢â¬â¢t doing so well with life. I was constantly getting into trouble with the law, not respecting authority, not focusing on my education and not taking my basketball career seriously everything was a joke to me I didnÃ¢â¬â¢t believe IÃ¢â¬â¢d make it this far in life there wasnÃ¢â¬â¢t much motivation to either, basketball was my only hope. It was a period of time in America characterised by prosperity and optimism. Kerima Polotan-TuveraÃ¢â¬â¢s Ã¢â¬Å"The VirginÃ¢â¬ is a short story that is centered on two characters namely Miss Mijares and The Carpenter. The title Ã¢â¬Å"The VirginÃ¢â¬ reflects the subject virginity which is an important and cherished value for Filipinos. A Filipina should be proud to have maintained her virginity but in the case of the thirty-four-year-old Miss Mijares,the main character named showcased were her stiff and aloof behavior wherein her superiority to herself makes her unfriendly and detached to other people. Also her attitude when it comes to dealing with people wherein she often humiliates them by asking them questions with regards to their standing in the society. Moreover, her life was effusively based on caring for her ailing mother and putting to school her niece thus, her realization to herself when it comes to her own personal life such as love and marriage was eluded. Miss Mijares is a thirty-four-year-old woman who works at a job placement agency wherein her perspective in life has put her into a situation of helping first her family before herself. Another problem that she encountered was confronting her emotions especially with her feelings to the new man at the carpentry shop wherein during the interview and application for the job. It was a rainy evening but the driver unloads his passengers. They protested but the driver has no choice. Miss Mijares and the man stepped down to the sidewalk and his touch had fallen on her flesh. The first encounter of the two characters is at the job interview. The way Miss Mijares treat him is as aloof and cold just like the way she treated her other interviewees. She looks at herself as superior which explains the impolite language she uses to communicate with them. According to the text Ã¢â¬Å"When she was younger, there had been other things to do-college to finish, a niece to put through school, a mother to care for. Ã¢â¬ Her childhood experiences affected the way she is now, it greatly affected her personality. Miss Mijares shows a bossy or arrogant kind of personality towards the guy, furthermore she was unwittingly drawn to the man especially during the time that both of them were stranded on an unknown street because of heavy rain and Miss Mijares driven by her feeling and emotions to the guy allowed herself to the invitation of the man. One day, she met a man applying on the job she was handing. Unlike the other applicants, she felt an unusual and strange feeling and she noticed that heÃ¢â¬â¢s teeth has a missing tooth. The man, unlike the other workers, has a big impact on Miss Mijares. She cared a lot on that man and even cared if heÃ¢â¬â¢s around or not. Miss Mijares looked at the man sharply feeling the malice in his voice knowing that the man has no wifeÃ¢â¬ ¦ yet. She was ashamed knowing that as if that man knew the ruffles on her blouse was one of the ways to put impact and volume on her chests. One day, this man was absent and Miss Mijares lost her way home which was a question why since it is been ages that she sauntering in that place. She found the man on the street and asked the reason for being absent in a week. She discovered that this man lost his son but he was never been married to its mother. It was important because it changed voting rights for women. It also gave the women of the United States more freedom. The Nineteenth Amendment also changed the way women were viewed by society and gave them a higher place in society. Before the nineteenth amendment was passed in June 4, 1919 women were not allowed to vote. If they tried to they would get in trouble with the law and they would be imprisoned. The article Ã¢â¬Å"WomenÃ¢â¬â¢s Fight for the Vote,Ã¢â¬ reads that Susan B. Anthony was prosecuted for illegally voting in the 1872 Elections, in Rochestor, New York. In Susan Barbers article, Ã¢â¬Å"One Hundred Years towards Suffrage: An Overview,Ã¢â¬ in 1874 while Susan B. Anthony was being prosecuted and taken to trial Sojourner Truth demanded a ballot to vote in the Battle Creek, Michigan, but she was turned away. However, in 1878 a women suffrage amendment was introduced in the United States Congress. The wording was unchanged in 1919, when the amendment finally passed both houses. This amendment was and still is very important because before this amendment women were allowed to do very little. The Nineteenth Amendment gave women more freedom and put women in a higher place in society. Women were obligated to be housewives and the majority of them were not allowed to work. An exception was when men went off to war women would have to replace the men in their jobs until they came back from war. All of this was before the Nineteenth Amendment was passed. After it was passed by congress women were allowed to vote also they were allowed to work on their own and have their own jobs, not just to replace men while they were off at war. They had big moral values and people finally valued them. In 1920, half a century after obtaining the right to vote women got the right to vote also. The nineteenth amendment read that the right of citizens of the United States shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. Women felt that they as citizens should have the right to vote. Many women like Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucy Stone, and Julia Ward Howe fought for the womenÃ¢â¬â¢s right to vote. Stanton and Anthony marched in a womenÃ¢â¬â¢s suffrage parade in 1919. They worked hard and tirelessly for womenÃ¢â¬â¢s voting rights. Many women would get together and they staged parades, organized protest meetings, endured hunger strikes, heckled candidates for Parliament, and spat policemen who tired to silence them. Many of the women involved were often imprisoned for their activities, before parliament granted them the right to vote in 1928. When women got the right to vote it changed the way they were viewed by society. They were given more respect and were now seen as people instead of just housekeepers. However, Native Americans still did not have the right to vote. Four years after ratification of the nineteenth amendment in 1924, citizenship; including the right to vote, was extended to Native Americans. The beginning of the fight for womenÃ¢â¬â¢s suffrage is usually traced to the Ã¢â¬Å"Declaration of SentimentsÃ¢â¬ produced at the womenÃ¢â¬â¢s convention in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. Four years later at the womenÃ¢â¬â¢s right convention is Syracuse in 1852. Susan B. Anthony joined the fight arguing that: Ã¢â¬Å"The right women needed above everyoneÃ¢â¬ ¦was the right of suffrage.Ã¢â¬ In May 1919 the necessary two-thirds vote in favor of women suffrage amendment was finally mustered in congress and the proposed amendment was sent to the states for ratification. because women lacked the vote and therefore political power, they were denied many opportunities that were open and available for men. In 1872, Myra Bradwell challenged Illinois law which restricted membership in the state bar to men. The Supreme Court upheld the law. In minor, a unanimous vote the court rejected the argument that either the privileges and immunities clause of the fourteenth amendment extended vote to women. In July 1890, the Territory of Wyoming, which allowed women to vote, was admitted as a state. Wyoming became the first state with women suffrage rights. Many women got together and made a petition asking that voting rights be given to women in 1871. Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and many others signed it. After the civil war, the suffrage movement was divided due to ideolog y differences. Two separate organizations pursued voting rights for women. The remaining twelve states of the union took over sixty years to add ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, ten of these states originally had rejected the amendment. Mississippi was the last state of the forty-eight states to ratify the amendment when it did so on March 22, 1984. A vital amendment that changed the United States constitution forever was the nineteenth amendment. It gave women the right to vote. However, it took half a century after for the women to gain this right in 1920.
